Employees at MC Sports in Lake Zurich were told over the weekend that the store will close in early January.
Shawn Jarzembowski, assistant store manager at the Lake Zurich store, said Thursday that the 14 employees had no idea that the retailer had plans to close.
“It’s tough. I am now looking for another job with the holidays approaching,” Jarzembowski said. He was told that the athletic store at 727 W. Main St. lost its lease.
Fidelity Group, owner of the center on Rand Road at Route 22, did not immediately return phone calls about the store closing or what is planned for the space.
Other nearby MC Sports stores are found in Wheaton and Kenosha. Jarzembowski, who has been at the Lake Zurich store for 11 years, said he was offered a job at the MC Sports store in Joliet, a move he said he is unable to make because of family obligations.
The Lake Zurich store has been open for about 14 years.
Closing sales are taking place until it closes.
Jarzembowski said he is not sure when the store will close. “We have to be out of here Jan. 15,” he said.
“It’s really sad,” he added.
